Chapter Five

Kalv liked the work on her farm. Doing the heavy labor that most people couldn’t get accustomed to helped him think. It was a rare breed of people who decided to take up this kind of lifestyle, being up before the sun and the strenuous labor of taking care of animals and planting crops. You had to love the smell of the earth, creating and building with your hands. There wasn’t any of the technology of this earth on Paladin. Maybe that was why he liked her farm so much. It reminded him of his home where everything worn, eaten, or sold was made and nurtured with care. He was a swirl of emotions. Sometimes he longed for his old home.

He thought of Ginna, with her sweet and feisty personality, and how she held him at night. Even if they didn’t make love, she made sure to hold him close, and now his heart was a steady beat but still encased in the hard shell of magic. He feared her getting closer but found that in such a short time he couldn’t think about being without her Each night he stood in the hallway outside her door trying to make himself go to the other room to sleep. Yet his hand reached out and turned the knob to her door, and he walked inside into her waiting arms. Ginna was his addiction, a passionate force that consumed his being. The curves of her body pulled him to explore each one, the depth her core and her taste drove him to frenzy.

Two days had passed since the fire, and now he worked to till the scorched part of the field into the rich soil. What was left of the burned grass would make the soil more fertile, yet as he worked the tractor his anger burned toward Luke Richfield. He would eventually hit the weasel of a man, he knew it and contented himself with only having to be patient until that happened.

Even though there was a chill in the air as the fall tried to take hold of the area, Kalv had his shirt off while he drove the piece of machinery. He was a dragon at heart, and his blood tended to run hot quickly. He noticed a white car in the driveway behind Ginna’s truck and stopped the tractor. Curiosity had him walking back to the house, plus he needed something cool to drink. Ginna was sitting with a woman who was two heads taller than her and willowy. Her blond hair fell in curls around her face and neck. She had a quick smile and a bodacious laugh that had Kalv instantly liking her. She saw him coming around the house and nudged Ginna to get her attention.

“This must be the hero of the hour. Kalv is it? I’m Sophie. Nice to meet you.” She held out her hand and stood. Her gaze roamed his body. “Are there more like you and where can I buy one?”

“I’m an original sweetheart.
